Safest-first decision path
- Print the provided file first.
- If an SVG exists and you can export it correctly, you usually do not need an external upscaler.
- SVG is resolution-independent, and re-rendering SVG at target size is better than upscaling a PNG because it does not invent detail or halos.
- The PPI rule applies to raster files (PDF/PNG), not SVG.
- For delivered raster PDF/PNG files, aim about 300 PPI at final print size when possible. About 150 PPI or higher can still be acceptable for larger pieces viewed at distance.
Estimate raster PPI with this quick check: file pixel width divided by intended print width in inches. Example: 3000 px / 10 in = 300 PPI.
When scaling a raster file, prefer the smallest scale factor that reaches your target PPI. A 2x scale is usually safer than 4x.
Paper finish note: matte or fine-art matte often preserves muted palettes more faithfully than glossy paper, but this is a tendency, not a guarantee.
Do you need upscaling?
Usually no. If you are printing one of the provided Quiet Rooms sizes and using the provided file for that size, you normally do not need an external upscaler.
- Printing a provided 8x10, 12x15, or 16x20 file: no upscaler needed.
- Using the SVG and exporting it correctly at your target size: no external upscaler needed.
- Only have a raster file and want to print larger than the provided size: upscaling can make sense, but use the smallest scale increase that gets you there.
- Only have a screenshot or a compressed chat-app copy: go back and use the original file instead of upscaling the degraded copy.
If a print shop or app wants JPG, PNG, or PDF only, export from the SVG at the final size first when possible. Only consider an external upscaler after that step.
For raster files, think of upscaling as a last-step sizing tool, not a quality guarantee.
Compact print settings by path
Home printer
- Use actual size or 100% scale first.
- Turn off auto-crop and auto-enhance on first print.
- If margins or sizing keep shifting, local print shop output is usually simpler for exact size.
Local print shop
Please print this file at exactly 8x10 inches, at 100% scale or actual size, with no crop and no fit-to-page.
Use the handoff PDF if you want the instruction in a separate page.
Phone printing
- Upload the original file directly, not a screenshot or chat-app copy.
- Save files to Files, Drive, or Downloads before leaving the page.
- Check size settings before sending to a printer or shop app.
Wall-test first
- Use the plain-paper wall-test PDF to check placement before artwork printing.
- Print at 100% and tape or clip where the frame would go.
- Open test-fit.html for quick wall-test steps.
Common mistakes checklist
- Printing from a screenshot instead of the original file.
- Leaving fit-to-page on when exact size is needed.
- Stretching artwork to a new ratio instead of matching the original ratio.
- Upscaling before checking whether a correctly exported SVG is available.
- Jumping to premium paper before one low-cost proof print.
Quick print questions
Do I need an upscaler for Quiet Rooms? Usually not for the provided standard-size files.
Should I print from a screenshot? No. Go back and use the original PDF, PNG, or SVG source.
What if my app or shop only accepts PDF, PNG, or JPG? Use the provided PDF/PNG first, or export from the SVG at the final size if you need a custom size.
What if I am unsure about wall size? Use Test Wall Size First before printing the artwork.
